Yoshi’s Crafted World, the beloved dinosaur’s new adventure for the Nintendo Switch, is based on a fairly fascinating gimmick involving the depth of stages. Basically, Yoshi is able to move in-between and interact with background and foreground elements that would usually be considered static in many such platforming titles. There are numerous instances of this mechanic being utilized during the trailer, but some of the most fascinating examples of this dynamic mechanic involved Yoshi attacking enemies in the foreground and flipping a stage at will to reveal brand new paths that simply looked like background objects before.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the game’s vibrant art style contributes to the storybook nature of the level design and the use of this flip mechanic. The Switch may not be a technical powerhouse, but games like this showcase why a bright color palette and creative design will sometimes best pure processing power.

Indeed, Yoshi’s Crafted World may very well be the game for Switch fans who still harbor a deep love for classic platformers. While Super Mario Odyssey promotes a more open-world take on the platformer genre, Yoshi’s Crafted World looks like the kind of classic platforming experience that we might have dreamed of as kids if we could dream quite as big as game’s clearly imaginative development team.

Tonight, through a post on the official Nintendo of America Twitter account, Nintendo announced that Yoshi‘s Crafted World will launch on the Nintendo Switch on March 29.

In addition to announcing that the game will be arriving this March, Nintendo also revealed a new story trailer for the game. Uploaded on Nintendo’s official YouTube account, the new trailer shows a group of Yoshi relaxing before being terrorized by Kamek and Baby Bowser. The villainous duo attempt to steal the Yoshi’s Sundream Stones (stones that “possess the power to make anyone’s wildest dreams come true”), however, accidentally scatter them across the world.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the game’s new trailer is Kamek. In addition to being a throwback to Yoshi’s Island, Kamek’s presence in Yoshi’s Crafted World shows that the character is becoming a more prominent part of the Mushroom Kingdom’s lexicon. After playing a nefarious foe in Mario Tennis Acesand making everyone’s life harder in Super Mario Party, it’s exciting to see Nintendo utilize Kamek rather than relying on the old hateable grump Bowser.
